GTA 6 has more than 170 animal species spread across Leonida's land, air, and sea. The wildlife mix includes familiar Florida animals, invasive species, and creatures not seen in a Rockstar game before. Some can also be tracked as Rare, Discoverable, or Legendary.

The short answer

Leonida will contain more than 170 animal species. Named examples include alligators, flamingos, manatees, pelicans, green iguanas, cane toads, feral cats, and rhesus macaque monkeys. Rockstar has not released the complete animal list or fully explained hunting, fishing, pets, or wildlife rewards.

GTA 6 has more than 170 animal species

The first useful number is now public: more than 170 species will inhabit Leonida across land, air, and sea. Game Informer reported the figure after interviewing Rockstar designers about how the studio translated Florida's ecosystems into GTA 6.

That is a much larger promise than a few decorative birds and roadside alligators. Leonida's wildlife is being built as part of the state's identity, with native animals living alongside invasive species that have become part of modern Florida life.

The number also comes with a sensible limit. It refers to animal species, not 170 animals that appear in one location, and no complete checklist has been published. A screenshot list can identify visible creatures, but it cannot fill the remaining gaps without guessing.

GTA 6 animal list: species named so far

These are the clearest named examples in the latest developer coverage:

AnimalTypeWhere it fits in Leonida
AlligatorNative reptileGrassrivers, wetlands, canals, and shoreline
FlamingoWading birdWetlands, shallow water, and coastal areas
ManateeAquatic mammalWarm coastal water, rivers, and bays
PelicanCoastal birdBeaches, marinas, bridges, and open water
Green iguanaInvasive reptileUrban greenery, canals, and warmer southern regions
Cane toadInvasive amphibianWet ground, gardens, and subtropical areas
Feral catIntroduced mammalSettlements, alleys, roadside areas, and abandoned property
Rhesus macaqueIntroduced primateWooded areas inspired by Florida's established monkey populations

This is a starting list, not the full roster. Official GTA 6 media also makes wildlife part of the scenery, especially around Grassrivers and the Leonida Keys, but a distant silhouette should not be promoted to a named species unless the identification is clear.

Why the monkeys are not as random as they sound

Rhesus macaques have established populations in Florida. Their inclusion follows GTA 6's wider interest in the state's unusual mixture of native, introduced, and invasive animals.

Wildlife across land, air, and sea

Leonida's six showcased regions give the animal system room to change naturally as players travel.

Grassrivers is the obvious wetland hotspot. Rockstar already describes predators beneath the water and places alligators at the center of the region's identity. Wading birds, amphibians, reptiles, and aquatic animals all fit its mangroves and slow water.

The Leonida Keys connect islands, open water, marinas, bridges, and tropical coast. This is where sea life and coastal birds can make boat trips feel different from inland driving.

Vice City can support a more urban mix: birds around the beach and port, iguanas near canals and greenery, and feral animals around dense neighborhoods. Wildlife does not need to stay in a national park to make the city feel alive.

Mount Kalaga National Park provides the strongest contrast. Its wooded northern terrain is officially associated with hunting and fishing, which suggests a different animal mix from the tropical south—even though Rockstar has not published a regional species table.

Rare, Discoverable, and Legendary animals

Some GTA 6 wildlife will fall into three special categories: Rare, Discoverable, and Legendary. The identities of those animals are being kept secret for now.

This is the clearest sign that at least part of the wildlife system goes beyond background ambience. Finding or tracking special animals gives exploration a purpose, particularly in wetlands, islands, forest, and open water.

What the labels unlock is still unknown. Rockstar has not detailed a compendium, map markers, photographs, trophies, crafting, collectibles, challenges, or payouts tied to these discoveries. The Red Dead comparison is understandable, but the category names alone do not prove GTA 6 will copy Red Dead Redemption 2's hunting loop.

Rockstar is also extending its animal rendering technology with iridescence, bioluminescence, translucency, feather variation, and new hair and fur systems. Those details matter for more than close-up screenshots: they allow birds, fish, insects, mammals, and nocturnal creatures to react differently to Leonida's light, water, and weather.

Will GTA 6 have hunting and fishing?

Hunting and fishing both appear in Rockstar's official description of Mount Kalaga National Park. That makes the activities part of Leonida's world, but the full mechanics remain unclear.

Rockstar has not yet shown:

  • how players start a hunt or fishing trip;
  • whether animals leave tracks or clues;
  • which weapons, rods, bait, boats, or equipment are usable;
  • whether meat, skins, trophies, or photographs have value;
  • whether seasons, time, or weather affect animal activity; or
  • whether Legendary animals are hunted, observed, photographed, or discovered another way.

The right expectation is that players will be able to hunt and fish in some form around Mount Kalaga. Anything more specific should wait for a gameplay demonstration.

Pets and the Red Dead Redemption 2 comparison

GTA 6's wildlife technology builds on Rockstar's work in the Red Dead Redemption series, but the setting calls for a different result. Red Dead 2 uses animals heavily for hunting, crafting, camp supplies, and its compendium. GTA 6 places wildlife inside a modern state full of cities, highways, beaches, wetlands, boats, and aircraft.

That could make animals more visible in traffic, neighborhoods, canals, shorelines, and tourist spaces rather than keeping most encounters in remote wilderness. It could also create stronger interactions between weather and wildlife. Our GTA 6 weather-system guide tracks those environmental questions as Rockstar reveals more.

Pets are a separate issue. The reported presence of feral cats does not establish player-owned cats, dogs, animal companions, pet customization, or a pet-care system. Rockstar has not announced those features.

The useful takeaway is simple: GTA 6 has an unusually large and technically ambitious animal system, but it is not yet accurate to describe it as “RDR2 hunting in Vice City.” The final balance between scenery, discovery, activities, and story encounters will only become clear through gameplay.
